            Public Relations department plays a very vital role in promoting the image of any organization, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has done a wonderful job as for as welfare of the residents of Chandigarh is concerned. But it was felt that its achievements are not being adequately highlighted and majority of Chandigarhians are not only unaware about all these achievements but also about the functioning of Corporation. Therefore it was decided that Chandigarh Municipal Corporation should have its own Public Relation Department. Thus the department came into being in the year 1997.

            This department acts like a bridge between the people of Chandigarh and Corporation. Highlighting major achievements and day to day activities of corporation in both electronic and print media is the foremost job of Public Relation Department. This department remains in touch with media-persons and inter-acts with them on the behalf of Corporation. It provides them all the relevant informationís regarding the functioning of Municipal Corporation. Apart from this Public Relations Department also monitors the entire spectrum of media reports about the functioning of Corporation. News clippings of various new papers are compiled every day and sent to all top functionaries and various departments for necessary action. Public Relation Department also releases Public notices, Auction and Tender notices as per the instructions of concerned department in the Newspapers. The Department also provides feedback to the Corporation as reflected in the media. Press Conferences, Workshops and Seminars of Municipal Corporation are also arranged and covered by this Department. The Department also covers all the visits of National and International dignitaries.
a) COMMUNICATION: Public Relations basically means persuasive communication to develop goodwill, understanding and cooperation and feed back, therefore it is a two way communication. Feed back is critical so as to structure further communication and enlighten the masses. The day to day functioning of the Department includes the coverage of the main functions of the Administration, issue of press notes, features, articles and messages for the newspapers and electronic media. Press Clippings are sent to the Mayor, Commissioner and other concerned officers of the Municipal Corporation.
b) PRESS NOTES:- The release of Press note containing various plans and policies of Municipal Corporation, is an important task of Public Relations Department for dissemination of information to all concerned. The Department basically deals with the print and electronic media. The primary function of the Department is to issue press notes, arrange press conferences and maintain liaison with newsmen accredited with Chandigarh Administration and also with the desk.
c) ADVERTISEMENTS:- The purpose of advertisements is to inform, guide, advise and educate the people. Thorough media planning is needed before releasing the advertisement, so that it reaches the targeted group. To achieve this object the Department is guided by the circulation figures and DAVP rates. It also ensures that the advertisement appears at appropriate point of time.
d) NEWS CLIPPING:- It is very important to keep a close watch on the news that appears in the Press as that has a direct or indirect bearing on the interest of Corporation. Public Relations Officer has been assigned the task of keeping a close watch on news items appearing in newspapers on day to day basis. It also acts as feedback mechanism for the Corporation.
e) Library:- Apart from imparting information to the Media section as well as general public, the Public Relations Department maintains a good book record including various By-laws, Rules & Regulations and other important books useful in maintaining lifestyle. The Library contains Municipal Act. and other valuable books of the office use.
